Copthorne win 2009 Lancing Sixes
21 schools competed in Lancing College’s annual U11's six-a-side tournament. From the four groups, the top two teams played in the main competition, the middle two teams in the plate competition and the bottom teams play in the consolation competition.
On a glorious afternoon Copthorne were the winners of Group A, Holmewood House were the winners of Group B with a 100% record, Great Walstead just pipped St Andrews on goal difference to head Group C and St Aubyns finished top of Group D.
In the semi-final, Copthorne and Great Walstead fought out a 0-0 draw, Copthorne progressing to the final 5-4 on penalties; in the other semi-final Holmewood House lost their unbeaten record to St Aubyns.
In a close final, Copthorne took the lead through one of their influential players, but St Aubyns equalised when one of their impressive strikers scored with a long range shot. This positive style had been a feature of St Aubyns play throughout the afternoon. With the match looking as though it was heading for extra time, Copthorne managed to produce a winning goal with a well taken shot drilled into the corner of the goal.
In the plate competition, Danes Hill overcame Handcross 3-1 and Solefield were 1-0 victors over the Duke of Kent in the consolation final.
