RGS Newcastle beat both the fog and their opponents in Leeds to become North-East champions and clinch a place in the National Finals at St. George’s Park
Yarm Prep and RGS Newcastle were the dominant teams in Group A, with only goal difference separating them after they had drawn their match 0-0. Meanwhile, in Group B, Newcastle School for Boys and Grammar School at Leeds were equally in charge but it was NSB who came out on top by virtue of a 1-0 win over GSAL in the opening fixture of the day.
The quarter-finals all went to form with the top two in each group all recording victories. However, the semi-finals were different with the two schools who had finished runners-up in the group stages overcoming the two group winners. Most notably RGS Newcastle triumphed in the “Geordie derby”, a single goal being enough to give them victory over a young Newcastle School for Boys team who look a good bet to do well next year.
So to the Final which could not have been tighter, Grammar School at Leeds and RGS Newcastle playing out a goalless draw. Only penalties could decide and, amidst much excitement, it was RGS Newcastle who eventually came out on top 4-3.
