TWO NEW SCHOOLS TO ENTER IN 2011

The 2010 Mercian League AGM took place on 21st June. Denstone College and Welbeck Defence College were accepted into the League for 2011 and will both compete in the Northern Section. The 2011 Finals will take place on Tuesday 29th March.

2010 TOURNAMENT: LOUGHBOROUGH GS WIN MERCIAN LEAGUE FINAL

Loughborough Grammar School gained revenge for defeat in last season's Final when they defeated Malvern to win the 2010 Mercian League title at Ludlow Town FC

A wind affected game was also very much a game of two halves, with Loughborough in charge during the first half and building up a two goal lead. They went ahead early in the game when a Loughborough player was clearly pushed in the penalty area to gain a soft penalty and Sam Russell stepped up to hammer home the kick. Loughborough doubled the lead on 35 minutes when Kyle Carlisle's shot took a deflection and ended in the back of the net. 2-0 at half-time was a fair reflection of the play.

However, the second half was a different story as Malvern soon pulled a goal back with a superb move involving a series of quick passes which ended with Dominic Stanley setting up Alex McGee for a clinical finish. Malvern threw everything forward and now it was Loughborough's turn to soak up pressure. However, their defence held firm and they secured a 2-1 victory to lift the Cup.

In the Mercian Combination Final, for 2nd XIs, Marlborough came from behind to defeat Oundle. Oundle missed a penalty before taking the lead on 50 minutes but Marlborough were soon level and they won the match two minutes from time when a cross from the left was neatly headed home by George Glaisher, his second goal of the game.
